Malec Chronicles – Pt3: Hard Workers

CAPTIONS AS TEXT

– The New York Institute was, as always, in a flurry of activity. Demon attacks, mundanes in need of rescuing, Downworlders making a ruckus…. It never ceased in the city that never slept.

– Jace was in charge when Alec wasn’t around. Seeing his parabatai’s family arrive, Jace grinned. He could finally go on his break. “Hey hey, Rafe!” “Hi, Uncle Jace! Can I watch you train?” “Anytime!”

“How was he today?” Alec asked. Magnus sighed, “Much better. He’s still young, but in such a rush to be like his daddy and uncle and aunties.” “I’ll talk to him soon. I know how it feels to live in someone’s shadow.”

– Alec went off to start work, leaving Magnus to greet his friend and fellow warlock. “Ragnor! How is my dear little cabbage?” Ragnor sighed. “Well, the Apocalypse hasn’t happened yet, so I can’t complain much.”

– Magnus and Ragnor led the kids into a room where they could study, and the elder warlocks could discuss Downworlder issues. Ragnor worked as an instructor at the Shadowhunter Academy.

– He had nothing but praise for the three Lightwood-Banes’ progress. Magnus was so pleased, that he decided a celebration was in order. “Another party?! Magnus NO.” Magnus grinned, “Magnus YES~~!”

– Back in the Weapons Room Alec had geared up to practice his archery. He was the Head of the Institute, but first and foremost he was a warrior; and a soldier.

– Until he’d met Magnus, all his life Alec had tried living up to the Lightwood name; the best Shadowhunter, the pride and joy of his parents. But it had only ever brought him misery and loneliness.

– So it hurt to think his own son felt the same pressure. Alec dreaded the conversation he’d have with Rafael, but it needed to be done. Low self esteem sucked. He was pulled out of his reverie by Jace’s arrival.

– “Parabrotai! Up for a little one on one sparring?” Alec cringed. “How many times have I asked you not to call us that, Jace?” “Dunno, I never listened when you did. Now come on, let’s kickbox!”

MY THOUGHTS

Speaking of Ragnor Fell

In the books, Ragnor is green. He’s a warlock with 3 demon marks: green skin, white horns, and extra finger joints/knuckles. So I was confused when on the show they made him look nothing like the canon art.

But I loved the actor’s delivery. I thought he was so cool; very distinguished. But I kid you not, I literally had a random rant with myself in the kitchen (cabbages are my trigger!) on how come they didn’t even make a nod to the green with just a few makeup tricks – some subtle contouring, eyeshadow, lipgloss, IDEK, something.

So when I made sim!Ragnor I decided to keep the TV look, but tweak it like how I felt they should’ve done on the show, if they didn’t want to go full green – clearly this is a thing they’re avoiding, since they didn’t bother making Catarina Loss blue-skinned either (but they thought they were cute putting her in that blue dress – I see you Freeform).
